A lifespan-extending drug has limited effects on aging

The immunosuppressive drug rapamycin has been shown to increase longevity in mice even when treatment begins at an advanced age. It is unclear if the extension of life also correlates with prolonged health and vigor.

In the current issue of the Journal of Clinical Investigation, Dan Ehninger and colleagues at the German Center for Neurodegenrative Diseases evaluated age-associated characteristics in mice treated with rapamycin. They found that rapamycin improved memory and spatial learning, reduced thyroid follicle size, and reduced body fat in older mice. However, many of these same attributes were also improved in young mice treated with the drug, indicating an age-independent drug effect.

The prevalence of cancer, a common cause of mouse mortality, was also decreased in older treated mice. The authors did find that rapamycin treatment had no effect on several age related symptoms, including cardiovascular and liver function, loss of muscle mass, strength retention, or balance.

These data suggest that rapamycin treatment may increase lifespan through reduction of cancer rates, and the drug may be useful for relief of some age related conditions.

In the accompanying commentary, Arlan Richards of the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio suggests that clinical trials to study the effect of rapamycin on age related neurodegenerative diseases of the elderly such as Alzheimer's disease should be considered.

DALLAS -- Legends Hospitality and the newly-renamed AT&T Stadium are using these ingredients grown and harvested at the WE over ME Farm at Paul Quinn College.

"It's going to be picked today, and used this afternoon -- it doesn't get fresher than that," said AT&T Stadium Executive Chef Orazio LaManna.

Recipes for the Cowboys' menu depends, in part, on what's thriving here. Ironically, the land is the old football stadium at Paul Quinn.

George Wasai played ball here, and has been the Cowboys food manager for 23 years. He knew the land from running plays, and now it's for harvesting a healthier choice.

"If you are not going to play football on the beautiful soil like this, make use of it," Wasai said.

"When I tell people are largest client is Legends food and the Cowboys, they think I'm making it up," said Michael Sorrell, the President of Paul Quinn College.

And that's just the bonus.

Paul Quinn College students originally set out to address affordable, healthy food choices in struggling parts of Dallas.

"Where else can you look around and say, 'How can we solve the problems we are faced with? We can create our own garden,'" Sorrell said.

A garden he calls the "organic field of dreams," modeled after Yale University's sustainable food project.

"There is nothing that chefs want to do more than produce fresh food, and knowing where it is coming from," Orazio said.

China: Where New Building Government Buildings Are Banned, And Official Reportedly Engage in Breast Milk Orgies

A series of stories recently help paint a picture of extravagance at the official level in China.

First of all, China has announced a 5-year ban on the construction of any new government buildings.

From Keith Bradsher at The New York Times:

China issued a directive on Tuesday banning the construction of government buildings for the next five years, the latest in a series of initiatives by President Xi Jinping to discourage corruption and foster frugality at a time of broad popular resentment against high-living bureaucrats.

Xi Jinping's attempt to crack down on opulent spending by government officials is well known. There were many reports about how the entire high end restaurant and banquet sectors of the economy went into freefall after a directive about cutting down on parties.

Meanwhile, two stories in WantChinaTimes.com, a Taiwan-based outlet that reports on Chinese activities shed light on the public pecadillos of Chinese officials.

This one is about breast milk orgies:

A reporter working for China's official Xinhua news agency has blown the whistle on sex parties held by wealthy businessmen to bribe high-ranking government officials, revealing details of activities such as drinking human breast milk.

Zhou Fang posted an article on his microblog on July 17 claiming knowledge of parties where officials would pay a 5,000 yuan (US$815) admission fee to engage in sex acts with young women and drink breast milk from young nursing mothers.

And this one (via Blake Hounshell) is about the man with 140 mistresses:

An official from Jiangsu province has set what is believed to be a record after authorities revealed that he had had more than 140 mistresses, including a mother and daughter, reports the Chinese-language Qingdao Financial Daily.

The dubious honor goes to Xu Qiyao, the former director of the Jiangsu provincial construction department. One of his mistresses had asked Xu to help her daughter find a job after she graduated from school ? which he did, after a fashion. Xu allegedly once boasted about this fact to friends when drunk and compared the sexual abilities of the mother and daughter.

Perhaps the most interesting part of that story is not the number of mistresses the official had, but rather the why:

Jin Weizhi, a vice-ministerial-level official, was said to have told people that there is no official at his level who doesn't have at least a few lovers. "It's not just for biological needs, it's a reflection of your status," he is alleged to have said. "Otherwise people will look down on you."

Mistresses have indeed in the past proved to be a test of an official's management skills and stamina.

Meanwhile, the Chinese manufacturing sector just hit an 11-month low.

Low expression of immune response gene 'MIF' increased risk for TB

PHILADELPHIAA researcher from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and colleagues have identified the genetic mutation in Africans with HIV that puts them at a much higher risk for tuberculosis (TB) infections.

Africans have some of the highest rates of TB in the world, and it has long been suspected that genetic susceptibility plays a role. However, establishing candidate genes across populations to gauge risk has remained a challenge.

Now, a new study, published this week in the online Early Edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, found that a commonly occurring polymorphism in an immune response gene called macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) confers almost a two-and-a-half fold increased risk for severe TB in patients from Uganda who were co-infected with HIV.

Low-expressers of MIF were almost twice as common among people of African ancestry as Caucasians.

"These results help explain the increased incidence of TB among this group," said Rituparna Das, MD, PhD, an instructor in the division of Infectious Diseases at Penn Medicine. "Moreover, this is especially important in people co-infected with HIV, who have a compromised immune system and also constitute the major public health challenge of controlling TB."

TB's prevalence is rising because of drug resistance and an increasing number of patients who are co-infected with HIV. People with HIV and latent TB infection are at a much higher risk for progressing to active TB disease, so identifying patients earlier and getting them in preventative TB treatments is a priority.

"Therapies to augment MIF action are under development, and may provide a new tool to combat the global TB epidemic," said Dr. Das.

Recently, Dr. Das received funding from the Penn Center for AIDS Research to further examine MIF in Botswana. The pilot project will examine the distribution of MIF genetic polymorphisms among HIV co-infected patients with pulmonary TB from the Botswana-UPenn Partnership site.

"With the high degree of TB exposure in that community, we hope to identify which patients are more likely to go on to develop active TB disease, and in the future, target these patients for preventive therapies," said Dr. Das.

ARPA-E grant supports UCSC research on high-power solar energy

A $1.6 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy's Advanced Research Projects Agency - Energy (ARPA-E) will support research at UC Santa Cruz on the development of an innovative optical device for harvesting concentrated sunlight into an optical fiber for applications such as thermal storage, photovoltaic conversion, or solar lighting.

The device will enable efficient and flexible use of sunlight collected by solar concentrators, according to principal investigator Nobuhiko Kobayashi, associate professor of electrical engineering in the Baskin School of Engineering at UC Santa Cruz. It is based on a unique thin-film waveguide that collects sunlight and transforms it to match an optical fiber with minimum losses compared to traditional light-concentrating optics.

The project is a collaboration between the Baskin School of Engineering and two Silicon Valley companies, Antropy Inc. and Tango Systems Inc. Antropy is the exclusive owner of the basic patents for the technology used in designing and fabricating the new optical device. Based in Portola Valley, it was founded in 2007 by Ernest Demaray, who earned his Ph.D. in chemistry at UC Santa Cruz in 1978 and has been a Silicon Valley entrepreneur for several decades. ?Tango Systems, based in San Jose, is an equipment company specializing in production sputtering systems and thin-film deposition services.

The project involves a new way to use solar concentrators, which are typically deployed in massive projects in which a large array of mirrors concentrates solar energy on a linear absorber or a tower, where absorbed heat is collected for generating electricity. Kobayashi's plan is to collect concentrated sunlight and transmit it through optical fibers to be stored or used remotely without significant losses.

"The problem is that when you look at these two optical components, a gigantic mirror and a tiny optical fiber, the coupling efficiency is very low," Kobayashi said. "We are developing a very special optical coupling device that enables efficient collection of high-power, concentrated solar energy. This optical coupling device could change the way we handle solar light."

The novel optical coupling device is enabled by special optical thin films based on Demaray's patents. He began collaborating with Kobayashi in 2010 to develop applications for optical films with high refractive index and low extinction coefficient. Tango Systems is providing the specialized thin-film deposition system needed to manufacture the optical coupling device.

"This thin-film technology allows us to design an efficient optical coupling device that can't be made with existing materials," Kobayashi said. "People have been trying to make an efficient optical coupling device for decades, and now we have the technology and knowledge in materials science, as well as the manufacturing technology to do it."

Kobayashi's project is among 66 cutting-edge research projects funded by the highly competitive ARPA-E program this year. ARPA-E seeks out transformational, breakthrough technologies that show fundamental technical promise but are too early for private-sector investment. These projects have the potential to produce game-changing breakthroughs in energy technology, form the foundation for entirely new industries, and have large commercial impacts.

"With ARPA-E and all of the Department of Energy?s research and development efforts, we are determined to attract the best and brightest minds at our country's top universities, labs and businesses to help solve the energy challenges of this generation," said energy secretary Steven Chu in announcing the awards. "The 66 projects selected today represent the true mission of ARPA-E: swinging for the fences and trying to hit home runs to support development of the most innovative technologies and change what?s possible for America?s energy future."

Report: New Saudi missile site detected

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) ? A prominent defense analysis group says it has identified a previously undisclosed missile site in Saudi Arabia's desert with signs suggesting Iran and Israel could be targeted in a possible launch from the location.

Thursday's report by the London-based IHS Jane's Intelligence Review could escalate concerns about a growing arms race in the Middle East linked to Iran's military expansions and nuclear program.

The report assesses satellite imagery that indicates launch pads oriented in the direction of Israel and Saudi Arabia's longtime regional rival Iran.

Saudi Arabia opposes Israel, but the Western-backed Saudi rulers also share Israel's worry over Iran's nuclear ambitions.

But Jane's also notes the site likely has "limited operational capacity" and potentially serves as a training and storage facility.

There was no immediate comment from Saudi authorities.

As smartphones continue to get thinner and thinner, LG Display is continually doing its part to shave off a few millimeters. Its latest introduction is this "world's slimmest full HD panel for smartphones", measuring at 5.2-inches diagonally, it's just 2.2mm thick and has a 2.3mm bezel. To get there, LG's display arm has pioneered new technology including "Advanced One-Glass-Solution" that puts dual flexible circuits between the panel and touch film, with 30 percent fewer lines on the panel. It also points out that every one of its pixels consists of RGB subpixels -- more shots fired at pentile screens -- and that it's capable of 535 nits of brightness, more than all current 1080p mobile LCDs. TCS replaces Tata Steel as India's most admired company: Fortune list

Software giant TCS has replaced its group firm Tata Steel as the country's most admired company, as per a Fortune list released on Tuesday. TCS is followed by Hindustan Unilever, ITC, Infosys and SBI in the top-five, while in 2012 top-ranked firm Tata Steel has slipped to seventh position in the list of India's 50 most admired companies.

Both ITC and Infosys are ranked at the third position. There are a total of four Tata Group companies on the list, while as many as ten PSUs have made it into the rankings, global business magazine Fortune's Indian edition said on Tuesday. Besides, the Indian entities of many multi-national companies including Coca-Cola, Microsoft, Samsung, Nokia, Dell and Intel have also made it into the league of most admired companies.

The rankings have taken into account various factors such as corporate governance, innovativeness, CSR and leadership. L&T (6th rank), Maruti Suzuki (9th) and ICICI Bank (10th) also feature in the top ten. Besides Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Tata Steel, other Tata Group firms in the list are Tata Motors at the 12th spot and Tata Power at 50th. Among state-run enterprises, SBI and ONGC are in the top ten, ranked at fifth and eighth positions, respectively.

Russia's culture ministry fires Bolshoi chief

MOSCOW (AP) ? The Russian culture ministry on Tuesday fired the director general of the famed Bolshoi Theater that has been mired in scandal since an acid attack on its artistic director.

Anatoly Iksanov would be replaced by Vladimir Urin, head of another major ballet and opera troupe, the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theater, said the culture minister, Vladimir Medinsky.

He said that a "difficult situation at the theater" was the reason for the dismissal. Iksanov, however, was offered to work as Medinsky's adviser in the ministry.

The Bolshoi has been shrouded in scandal for years but a fierce conflict erupted in January when an assailant threw acid into the face of Sergei Filin, the artistic director of ballet.

In March, police arrested Bolshoi soloist Pavel Dmitrichenko over his involvement in the attack. Dmitrichenko admitted that he had agreed to an offer from an acquaintance to rough up Filin, but he insisted that the man had used acid on his own initiative. Despite Dmitrichenko's confession, many in the ballet company have stood by him, saying they do not believe him capable of staging such a crime. About 300 dancers and staff, led by principal dancer and Iksanov's key opponent Nikolai Tsiskaridze, signed an open letter claiming that Dmitrichenko had slandered himself under police pressure.

The Bolshoi reopened in 2011 after a $1 billion renovation. Despite the lavish sums, some of the work was of poor quality, with cracks appearing in the walls and gold leaf crumbling away.

Iksanov has been at loggerheads with many of the troupe's famous dancers, including Tsiskaridze who accused him of mismanaging the Bolshoi's reconstruction, ruining its repertoire and abusing dancers' rights. Iksanov and his backers have dismissed the criticism.

Christian Hernandez Leaves Facebook For White Star Capital, Raising $100M Fund

Christian Hernandez, a long-time employee for Facebook in Europe, is leaving the company to go full-time at White Star Capital, an early-stage VC investment firm founded by Eric Martineau-Fortin. Hernandez was most recently Facebook's director for EMEA, and before that had been head of platform partnerships for the region. White Star to date has backed some 20 companies both in the U.S. and Europe, including Betaworks, Science, Bloglovin? in Sweden, Execution Labs in Canada and Dollar Shave Club. Two companies have exited: Summly, sold to Yahoo!; and Ludia, sold to Fremantle. It says its raised $70 million in follow-on financing. TechCrunch understands that White Star is currently raising money for a new fund of $100 million, with about 80% of that from institutions and family offices. So far $20 million has been committed.

Android Jelly Bean Tops Gingerbread for First Time

Android Jelly Bean is now the most popular version of Google's mobile operating system, surpassing Gingerbread for the first time.

According to stats published on Monday, Jelly Bean is now running on 37.9 percent of Android devices. Gingerbread lands at 34.1 percent, followed by Ice Cream Sandwich at 23.3 percent.

Last month, approximately 33 percent of Android users were on Jelly Bean, 25.6 percent were on Ice Cream Sandwich, and 36.5 percent were on Gingerbread.

Jelly Bean first topped Ice Cream Sandwich back in May, when approximately 28.4 percent of Android devices were running Jelly Bean, beating out ICS at 27.5 percent.

Very few Android devices are running the earliest versions of the mobile OS at this point. About 3.1 percent are on Froyo, 1.4 percent have ?clair, and 0.1 percent are running Donut (as well as the tablet-centric Honeycomb).

At least two high-profile Android Jelly Bean devices have debuted in recent months: the Samsung Galaxy S 4 and the HTC One. In late May, Samsung said it had shipped more than 10 million Galaxy S 4 devices, a number that has reportedly now reached 20 million.

Last month, Samsung rival Apple took a swipe at Android fragmentation by adding a pie chart to its website that said 93 percent were using iOS 6, 6 percent were on iOS 5, and 1 percent were on an earlier iOS. The pie chart was clearly a nod to the charts featured on Google's Android developer website.

Google will reportedly unveil the next version of Android, Key Lime Pie, in October, which is the fifth anniversary of the launch of the first Android-based phone, the T-Mobile G1, aka the HTC Dream.

'State of shock': 10 killed in Alaska seaplane crash

A small airplane crashed Sunday morning at an airport in Alaska, killing the pilot and nine passengers. A team from the NTSB is expected to arrive this afternoon to investigate. NBC's Mike Taibbi reports.

Ten people were killed Sunday when their seaplane was ?engulfed in flames? at the Soldotna Airport in Alaska.

Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board were still trying to determine what caused the DHC-3T single propeller aircraft, owned by Rediske Air, to crash.

The pilot and co-owner of the company, Walter Rediske, 42, was described as ?highly experienced? by a spokesman.

?This is a real hard time for everyone,? said Andrew Harcombe, who also described himself as a family friend.

?Andrew was a highly experienced pilot and lifelong Alaskan. We are all in a state of shock.? ??

He added that the company will cooperate fully with investigators.

Investigators look at the remains of a fixed-wing aircraft that was engulfed in flames Sunday in Soldotna, Alaska.

The Soldotna Police Department said the accident took place around 11:20 a.m. (3:20 p.m. ET), and emergency responders arrived to find the aircraft engulfed in flames.?

?We saw the plume immediately when we left the station,? Capt. Lesley Quelland of Central Emergency Services, told the Anchorage Daily News, adding that the big black cloud was visible from the station at least three miles away.

Harcombe said the air charter company only flew in Alaska had been in business for more than 20-years, adding that the company flew to both airports and more remote locations in the state.?

Clint Johnson,?chief of the NTSB in Anchorage, told?NBC's Alaska affiliate?that everyone aboard the plane were killed after the it crashed, though it is unclear whether the accident happened during takeoff or landing.

Soldotna is south of Anchorage on the Kenai Peninsula.

NEW YORK (AP) ? A solar-powered aircraft completed the final leg of a history-making cross-country flight Saturday night, gliding to a smooth stop at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport.

The Solar Impulse touched down at JFK at 11:09 p.m., completing the final leg of the cross-continental journey that started in California in early May. For Saturday's final leg, the aircraft left Dulles International Airport a little before 5 a.m.

The flight plan for the revolutionary plane, powered by some 11,000 solar cells, had called for it to pass the Statue of Liberty before landing early Sunday at New York. But an unexpected tear discovered on the left wing of the aircraft Saturday afternoon forced officials to scuttle the fly-by and proceed directly to JFK for a landing three hours earlier than scheduled.

Pilot Andre Borschberg trumpeted the success of the project.

"It was a huge success for renewable energy," Borschberg said while standing in front of Solar Impulse on the runway at JFK. "The only thing that failed was a piece of fabric."

Borschberg noticed balance issues with the wing in the early afternoon Saturday off the coast of Toms River, N.J., said Alenka Zibetto, a spokeswoman for Solar Impulse.

Officials said the pilot and aircraft didn't appear to be in danger. They said the eight-foot tear on the lower left side of the wing wasn't expected to worsen through the final portion of the trip.

"It was supposed to be the shortest and easiest leg," said Bertrand Piccard, one of the two pilots who took turns flying the Solar Impulse across the United States. "It was the most difficult one."

Piccard said in addition to the wing issue, another problem with the landing was Borschberg's lack of air breaks to avoid making turbulence in the wing with the tear.

Despite the relatively short distance, Saturday's commuter-like hop was a long flight. The slow-flying aircraft was traveling between two of the world's busiest airports and was required to take off very early in the morning and land very late at night, when air traffic is at a minimum.

"This is a leg where everybody is quite moved," Piccard said shortly after the plane was in the air over Washington early Saturday.

The aircraft soars to 30,000 feet while poking along at a top speed of 45 mph. Most of the 11,000 solar cells are on the super-long wings that seem to stretch as far as a jumbo jet's. It weighs about the size of a small car, and soars with what is essentially the power of a small motorized scooter.

The Solar Impulse left San Francisco in early May and has made stopovers in Phoenix, Dallas-Fort Worth, St. Louis, Cincinnati and Dulles.

The cross-country flight is a tuneup for a planned 2015 flight around the globe with an up-graded version of the plane.

Solar Impulse's creators view themselves as green pioneers ? promoting lighter materials, solar-powered batteries, and conservation as sexy and adventurous. Theirs is the high-flying equivalent of the Tesla electric sports car.

Europe saw the solar plane first with a test flight from Switzerland and Spain to Morocco last year.

Promoted as solar-powered, what really pushes the envelope with this plane is its miserly energy efficiency, Borschberg said before the flight.
