Wall Street back in business after storm shutdown

(AP) ? The New York Stock Exchange will open on Wednesday ? because it had to open.

In a bit of welcome news for fund managers, investors and even the economy, the company that operates the iconic exchange at 11 Wall Street announced it would not extend its trading shutdown to a third day.

Wall Street experts had feared that another delay because of Hurricane Sandy would have meant a dangerous back-up of customer orders to buy and sell stock. It also could have dealt a blow to the image of U.S. markets, already damaged by investor distrust, sudden market swings and a series of trading glitches, including the botched IPO of Facebook.

"The world is used to seeing the financial markets through the lens of the floor of New York Stock Exchange," said Larry Leibowtiz, chief operating officer of NYSE Euronext, which operates the exchange. "It gives them a sense of comfort."

The New York Stock Exchange said its building and trading floor are fully operational and that normal trading will resume Wednesday at the usual starting time of 9:30 a.m. Since power is out in much of downtown Manhattan, the company said it will run the exchange using its own backup generators, a first.

The closing on Tuesday marked the first time since 1888 that the NYSE halted trading for two consecutive days because of weather. As the NYSE staff scrambled Tuesday to make sure that that 124-year record wouldn't be surpassed by another day of delay, there were reports on the Internet that the exchange floor had flooded.

It was a false alarm.

The exchange also said that a key data center in New Jersey housing computers used to trade stocks was in good condition after the storm and would be fully up and running Wednesday.

Mark Travis, president of Intrepid Capital Funds in Jacksonville Beach, Fla., said he was worried that the longer markets remained closed, the greater the backlog of pending trades that would need to be cleared when normal trading resumed.

"You build up pressure when you keep people out of the markets," Travis said. "Trading volume that may normally happen in a two-day period could get compressed into an hour or two when markets reopen."

Add to that Hurricane Sandy's timing, which was awful for the exchange. Instead of arriving on a weekend when the exchange is closed, it blasted into Manhattan on a Monday, and the start of a crucial week, too.

This week is the last full one before the presidential election. What's more, the government publishes a key report Friday that traders like to bet ahead of ? October's unemployment figures.

Another wrinkle: Wednesday is the last day of the month, which is when traders and fund managers look to stock markets for final prices to value holdings for reports they're required to send to investors and regulators.

"They need to have current prices for their holdings," said Peter Jankovskis, co-chief investment officer at Oakbrook Investments in Chicago. "It's a positive that they are reopening the market."

Jim Paulsen, chief strategist at Wells Capital Management, agreed, but for a different reason ? the economy.

"It's not just about trading; it's about confidence," Paulsen said. "We're watching these horrific images of the storm, and people are thinking whether they should go ahead with that big purchase they were thinking about. It doesn't do any good to have another day with headlines saying the U.S can't figure out how to open its stock exchange."

The exchange spent much of Tuesday testing its trading systems using its all-electronic Arca system. But Leibowitz, the chief operating officer, said there would be enough traders and market makers on the floor of the exchange tomorrow ? 100 or so, he estimated. He said many are staying in nearby hotels.

The exchange also tested to see whether fuel trucks could get to the exchange despite flooded highways, tunnels and bridges. Leibowitz said the trucks were able to arrive, and the exchange took the opportunity to top off the tanks for the backup generators. The exchange can operate for 40 hours on backup generators before refueling.

"It's not like your car," he said. "You don't wait until fuel light goes on."

Thomas Caldwell, chairman of Caldwell Securities, said he was concerned there would be a big news event that would change investors' opinions about stocks during the shutdown. That could have led to a flood of orders to buy or sell stock when the market reopened. Luckily, that didn't happen.

"Europe is still Europe, Japan is still Japan," he said.

In addition to the halted trading, dozens of companies postponed earnings reports this week because of the storm.

In Europe, though, business went on as usual Tuesday. Stock markets rose broadly after falling the day before. Trading was subdued in the wake of the storm. Britain's FTSE 100 index rose 0.9 percent, Germany's DAX rose 1.1 percent and the CAC-40 in France was 1.5 percent higher.

Crude oil rose 14 cents to settle at $85.68 in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

U.S. bond trading was closed Tuesday. It will resume Wednesday.

First WSOP finalist out, 8 left in run for $8.53M - KTTC Rochester ...

By OSKAR GARCIA
Associated Press

A 57-year-old poker professional from Sacramento, Calif., was eliminated in ninth place at the World Series of Poker on Monday night, leaving eight players competing for $8.53 million.

Steve Gee was eliminated less than two hours into play at the no-limit Texas Hold 'em main event after testing Russell Thomas with a tough wager for the last of his 11.4 million in chips.

Thomas called and showed a pair of queens, better than Gee's pocket eights.

Gee's ouster means he makes no additional money after a break of more than three months. All nine finalists were paid nearly $755,000, the ninth-place prize, after making the final table in July.

Thomas moved to roughly 40 million in chips after the hand, second at the table.

"If I knew he had pocket queens, I would have checked," Gee said after being eliminated. "I'm disappointed. I told myself I wasn't going to play scared."

The six professionals and three amateurs were trying to gamble their way to a seven-figure payday. The top seven players will win at least $1 million each.

The players tested each other from the start, re-raising chips back and forth in moves that will ultimately result in everyone - besides the winner, perhaps - gambling their stacks against one another.

On the first hand of play, Gee bluffed Thomas on a pot worth several million chips, though Thomas held just nine high and wouldn't have been able to consider playing the hand to the end.

Michael Esposito, 44, of Seaford, N.Y., played while uncertain about the status of his waterfront home as Superstorm Sandy hit the East Coast.

His son, James Esposito, said neighbors have said the streets are flooded, but the family is focused on the card game in the Nevada desert.

"Odds are likely that it's flooded," he said. "I know I saw a picture of the house three doors down - the streets are totally flooded."

Michael Esposito, a commodities broker, is one of three remaining amateurs at the start of the final table.

They include 21-year-old Jake Balsiger, an Arizona State senior looking to become the youngest main event champion ever, and Thomas, a 24-year-old insurance actuary who's helping Aetna adjust to new regulations passed under President Barack Obama's signature health care overhaul.

The chip leader heading into the final table was 24-year-old poker professional Jesse Sylvia, who began the final stretch with 43.9 million in chips, just over 22 percent of the chips in play.

The other finalists are all poker professionals: 33-year-old Jeremy Ausmus of Las Vegas, 24-year-old Greg Merson of Laurel, Md., 27-year-old Robert Salaburu of San Antonio, Texas, and 30-year-old Andras Koroknai of Debrecen, Hungary.

Chips have no real monetary value in tournament poker. Each player at the final table must lose all his chips to lose the tournament, and win all the chips at the table to be crowned champion.

The tournament began in July with 6,598 players and was chopped down to nine through seven sessions spread over 11 days. Play stopped after nearly 67 hours logged at the tables for each player, with minimum bets going up every two hours.

The finalists will play Monday night until only three players remain, then the three top finishers will settle the title on Tuesday.

Steve King: Hurricane Sandy Aid Must Have Strings To Avoid Waste On 'Gucci Bags'

WASHINGTON -- Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) said on Tuesday that federal aid for people impacted by Hurricane Sandy should be approved only with a specific spending plan in place so funds are not used for "Gucci bags and massage parlors," like after Hurricane Katrina.

"I want to get them the resources that are necessary to lift them out of this water and the sand and the ashes and the death that's over there in the East Coast and especially in the Northeast," King said during a Tuesday evening debate in Mason City, Iowa.

"But not one big shot to just open up the checkbook, because they spent it on Gucci bags and massage parlors and everything you can think of in addition to what was necessary," he said later, referring to Hurricane Katrina.

During his final debate with Democratic challenger Christie Vilsack, the former first lady of Iowa, King doubled down on his disaster aid stance, which is that it should be paid for or not given at all.

King currently leads Vilsack by four points, according to a HuffPost Pollster estimate, but he has garnered the attention of national groups looking to oust him based on his often far-right positions.

The congressman, who is running for his sixth term, was outspoken about -- among other things -- the need to pay for any spending on disaster relief, an issue he has dealt with before. In 2005, he voted against a bill to help Hurricane Katrina victims because he said it cost too much at $51.8 billion. King was one of only 11 members of Congress to oppose the bill.

King said last week that his vote against Hurricane Katrina relief was "a good vote" and "a principled vote."

"I said that there will be all kinds of wasted funds," he said during an Oct. 23 debate with Vilsack, which aired on Iowa Public Television. "There?s no plan to spend it. I got beaten up on by many of the newspapers around, but I stood on that and I said it?s a principled vote and it will be easier to defend every day."

King said on Tuesday that some of his critics over that vote have since come around. "Sometimes you have to take lumps, but you have to do the right thing," he said.

King also said he would take a similar approach this time around and stand against efforts to "just throw a dart at the dartboard and say" what funding is needed to deal with Sandy's impact on the East Coast.

Vilsack called King's comments "heartless" and "extreme."

"In Iowa, we take care of people," she said. "That's all I think I need to say."

Both candidates were asked if they would pledge to donate some or all of their remaining campaign advertising funds to those affected by the storm. Vilsack said her money is already spent, but King said he might consider it.

"The first thing I thought was yes and the second thing was, I should ask my donors, because they're really the people who have contributed that money," he said. "So I don't think I can answer that unless I do. My instinct would be, why not pull the plug on it right now? But I don't think that's going to happen and I would have to go to my donors before I could say completely yes."

blog.adriennerose.me: Health and Fitness Apps of Awesomeness.

Do you have a smart phone? If you do, do you realize that you have SO MANY awesome freaking things at your fingertips to better yourself??

If you don't... Go get one, now. Because your life is most definitely not complete.

Alrighty, now that's out of the way... I have to tell you that I am a big fan of using my smartphone (iPhone) to better myself. It's not cheating, it's called using your resources. Duh.?

General Health Apps:

Now, I have an iPhone so I am going to link up with iPhone apps, but, I am sure for those of you with Android that the same, or similar apps can be found.?

MyFitnessPal is a great app and website dedicated mostly to counting calories. It is great to use for beginners, and advanced calorie counting peeps. You can also track your excercise, it gives you approximate calories burned, if you do not have a Heart Rate Monitor or anything. It's pretty amazing.

You do not have to have a SmartPhone to use their great service. MyFitnessPal is a fully integrated website to use on your phone or computer! They have apps for Android, iPhone, Blackberry, and Windows Phones.?

I am pretty new to Fooducate but I find it pretty nice in the grocery store when I am shopping. It will tell you the "grade" of the food you scanned, what's in it, and why it is or isn't good for you. It will also suggest a 'better' product to purchase instead. I found this really helpful yesterday when I was shopping for flour.

This app also has a great website too! I've learned a lot about foods that I eat with this app. (One of our goals to healthy eating is only eating foods that we KNOW what all the ingredients actually ARE in them, this helps a lot with that).

3) M. Calendar (for those of us who deal with *that* time of the month...)

Though, I see, now that I searched for this one again, that there are loads of other apps for this same purpose. That is pretty neat!?

Fitness Tracking:?

I absolutely adore this app. It is perfect for tracking any activity!

I have used it to track (GPS even!) walking, running, and bicycling! It's awesome because it will tell you the miles, and how long it's taking you! It's wonderful.?

I even use it in the gym to track the time on how long I have been strength training.

It has been one of the most accurate and reliable apps that I use. It even guesses your calorie use! Which is most handy!?

You don't need the fancy Nike shoes, or Nike shoe insert to get great use from this free app! I love it. I use a lot of apps to track my running.

This app, however, ONLY tracks running. It's kind of nice though, it gives you little medals, and encouragement along the way. It integrates nicely with Facebook, making it so friends can "like" or comment on ?your Nike+Running post, and you hear cheers for you to keep moving during your run. That is my most?FAVORITE part about this app. People can encourage you right from the comforts of their own home. lol

Endomondo is another great all around fitness tracking app! It tracks great mileage with walking, running, and (I assume, but haven't tried it yet) cycling!

Endomondo has a great community full of fellow fit people who are ready and willing to give you encouragement along the way! The community also puts out great challenges all the time! Most calories burned, most miles walked/run/cycled. Short challenges, long challenges, whatever you can think of! They're great! People (your friends on Endomondo) can also give you pep-talks that you can hear during your?exercise? It's pretty rad!

The ONLY downfall I find in this app, is when I am running inside on a treadmill and it does not track the time correctly. But, the good thing is, with all my other apps that I am running, I can just monitor, and change it on the Endomondo website. Great!?

This is a fairly new-to-me app as well. And guess what? I AM IN LOVE WITH IT! It's so freaking cool! It assigns a point system to any and all of your exercises! And then you can level up, participate in challenges, and make some really great fitness buddies!

I find that this app makes me excited to work out, and that's a really great thing for an app to have! I really recommend it! It's quite fun!?

This app is absolutely positively amazing. It has gotten me up off the couch, and running for 25minutes straight in 7weeks!! I love this app. It's FREE which is a huge bonus!

This app gives you tiny manageable increments to run, it's a 8/9week program, and is totally AWESOME. Totally doable! It is THE app to have if you want to get off your touch and get running!

It integrates with Facebook and lets all your friends know how freaking awesome you are.?

These are my most used and favorite fitness apps on my iPhone right now! I believe all of these (except Fitocracy -- which will soon be available for Android) are available for the Android phones too!

What apps do you use? What are you favorites? Any that I didn't mention here?? I am always interested in new and fun fitness apps!?

Election surrogates fight over who is more confident in Ohio, elsewhere

Reince Priebus knows why the Republicans are going to win on election day. Elections, just like football, are decided by a campaign's ground game. Democrats?"are a fraction of where they were in 2008, and we?re far ahead of where we were in 2008. And our ground game is better than their ground game," Priebus said on State of the Union. "We?re going to do more voter contacts this year compared to all of 2008 and all of 2004 combined," he said. "We have an army on the ground." Priebus was so excited about their ground game that he actually sounded like a football coach while endorsing the campaign's grassroots efforts.?"We?ve built our campaign and organization for this very close race,"?he said. "And we are very confident where we are now and where we?re going to be on Nov 6." Maybe he can take over the Jets after Rex Ryan gets fired in two weeks.?

Karl Rove said things are moving, slowly but surely, for Mitt Romney in the big swing states during his appearance on?Fox News Sunday.?Rove sees "movement toward Romney, but slow and [that's] simply because we're getting down to a very thin group of people left undecided." Rove said he's confident of the campaign's chances in Ohio because of their vaunted ground game. He said Romney had?"busted the metrics for the 2004 campaign," by knocking on over 2 million doors, and the decline in absentee ballots is hurting the Obama campaign.?

Meanwhile, Obama surrogate Stephanie Cutter isn't sweating the Republicans ramped up effort in Ohio, or a new poll showing the two candidates are tied in the state. "We feel pretty good about where we are on the ground there," Cutter said during her appearance on ABC's?This Week.?"In many cases, we are beating Mitt Romney three-to-one in the early vote," she said. "Our people are turning out, and they are turning out very in very high numbers. We feel very good about Ohio and we think we?re gonna win it." She also wasn't sweating the Des-Moines Register's Romney endorsement, their first Republican endorsement in forty years. "It was a little surprising to read that editorial because it didn?t seem to be based at all in reality, not just in the president?s record but in Mitt Romney?s record," Cutter said. "It says he?d reach across the aisle when he?d do the exact opposite... He?s never once stood up to the far extreme right wing."?

RELATED: Reince Lowers Expectations; Obama Reviews the Tape

If Ohio Gov. John Kasich was a betting man, he'd be calling his bookie right now and placing a bet for a Romney victory. He says he finally believes Romney is going to win his state. "I believe right now we are currently ahead, internals show us currently ahead," Kasich said on NBC's?Meet the Press. "I honestly think that Romney is going to carry Ohio, and you know I haven't been saying this. I now believe it is going to happen." Kasich pointed to Romney's first debate performance as a turning point for undecided voters in Ohio.?"It's going to be really close," Kasich said. "I do think we will know before the end of the night. I'm not sure it's going to be as close as everybody is saying."

RELATED: Reince Priebus Says Harry Reid Is a 'Dirty Liar'

Sen. Ron. Johnson thinks people in Wisconsin don't care enough about Mourdock's rape comments ?that it will have an effect on his chances next week.?"It's not even an issue here in Wisconsin," Johnson said on Fox News Sunday. "It doesn't even move the radar at all." He said only one person has asked him about Mourdock's rape comments. One! Voters care more about the White House's handling of the Benghazi attacks, according to Johnson.?Confirming this is the new Republican party talking point on embarrassing rape comment discussions, Priebus echoed that sentiment during his State of the Union appearance. "I don?t think any party has a monopoly on gaffes. Clearly people running for office misspeak and they make mistakes," Priebus said. "The reality is overwhelmingly the people out there are not talking about what Richard Mourdock said. They are talking about the economy and what happened in Benghazi." But, when Crowley brought up John Sununu's race remarks, he did admit the gaffes can be a distraction to the campaign. "I mean you want people to be disciplined," he said. "And if people misspeak, and for no apparent reason cause small brush fires on their own that?s a distraction."

Another person defending Richard Mourdock: Newt Gingrich. The former GOP Presidential hopeful used his appearance on This Week to try and clarify what Mourdock really meant when he said pregnancy caused by rape is "God's will." "If you listen to what Mourdock actually said, he said what every Catholic and every fundamentalist in the country believes: Life begins at conception,? Gingrich said. "But the radical on abortion is Obama who as a state senator voted three times in favor of allowing doctors to kills babies in the eight or ninth month that they were born, having survived late night abortion," he added, "and the Democratic Party platform, which says that you should pay with your tax money for late-term abortions."

Unfortunately your browser does not support IFrames.

John McCain used his appearance on CBS's Face the Nation to continue deriding the President for his handling of the Benghazi consulate attacks.?"This tragedy turned into a debacle and massive cover-up or massive incompetence in Libya is having an impact on the voters because of their view of the commander in chief," McCain said.?"It is now the worst cover-up or incompetence I have ever observed in my life. ..." said McCain. "Somebody the other day said to me, 'Well, this is as bad as Watergate.' Nobody died in Watergate."

If you're looking for someone to try and guess how hurricane Sandy is going to affect the election, do not ask David Axelrod. He has no idea. CNN's?State of the Union?host Candy Crowley tried to get it out of him, but he wouldn't bite.?"Were most concerned about people. This storm could affect 50 million people," David Axelrod said. Axelrod did acknowledge that damage from the storm, if it ends up being as serious as they're predicting, could make it difficult for some people to get to the polls. ?"The best thing we can do is to focus on how we can help people, and hope it all clears out by next weekend," he said.

Chinese officials bow to protests against factory

NINGBO, China (AP) ? After a weekend of protests by thousands of citizens over pollution fears, a local Chinese government relented Sunday and agreed that a petrochemical factory would not be expanded, only to see the protesters refuse to halt their demonstration.

The standoff in the prosperous city of Ningbo has highlighted the deep mistrust between people and the government in China. Should they continue, the demonstrations would upset an atmosphere of calm that Chinese leaders want for a transfer of power in the Communist Party leadership next month.

The protest in the eastern city, which comes at a sensitive time in China's political calendar, had swelled over the weekend and led to clashes between citizens and police. The Ningbo city government said in a statement Sunday evening that they and the project's investor had "resolutely" agreed not to go ahead with the expansion. The factory is a subsidiary of Sinopec, one of the biggest petrochemical companies in the world.

Outside the government offices where crowds of protesters remained, an official tried to read the statement on a loudspeaker but was drowned out by shouts demanding the mayor step down. On the third attempt, the crowd briefly cheered but then turned back to demanding that authorities release protesters being held inside.

Liu Li, 24, a Ningbo resident, said the crowd did not believe the government's statement.

"There is very little public confidence in the government," she said. "Who knows if they are saying this just to make us leave and then keep on doing the project."

The city government was likely under great pressure to defuse the protest with China's leadership wanting calm for the party congress next month. It was unclear whether local authorities will ultimately cancel the petrochemical project or continue it when the pressure is lower.

Hundreds of people outside the government offices refused to budge despite being urged to leave by officials. Riot police with helmets and shields came out of the government compound and pushed the crowd back. Some people including families ran away. Police dragged six men and one woman into the compound, beating and kicking at least three of them. Police also smashed placards and took away flags.

The crowd roared for the protesters' release. Police also briefly detained ITN correspondent Angus Walker outside the offices.

The demonstration in wealthy Zhejiang province is the latest this year over fears of health risks from industrial projects, as Chinese who have seen their living standards improve become more outspoken against environmentally risky projects in their areas.

"The government hides information from the people. They are only interested in scoring political points and making money," said one protester, Luo Luan. "They don't care about destroying the environment or damaging people's lives."

The protests began a few days earlier in the coastal district of Zhenhai, where the petrochemical factory is located. On Saturday they swelled and spread to the center of Ningbo city, whose officials oversee Zhenhai.

Residents reported that Saturday's protests involved thousands of people and turned violent after authorities used tear gas and arrested participants.

Authorities said "a few" people disrupted public order by staging sit-ins, unfurling banners, distributing fliers and obstructing roads.

Early Sunday, thousands of residents began gathering outside the offices of the municipal government. Hundreds marched away from the offices in an apparent effort to round up more support along nearby shopping streets. Police diverted traffic to allow them to pass down a main road.

The crowds in Ningbo are a slice of China's rising middle class that poses an increasingly boisterous challenge to the country's incoming leadership: Armed with expensive smartphones, Internet connectivity and higher expectations than the generations before them, their impatience with the government's customary lack of response is palpable.

A 30-year-old woman surnamed Wang said officers took her to a police station Saturday and made her sign a guarantee that she would not participate in any more protests, but she came back Sunday anyway.

"They won't even let us sing the national anthem," Wang said. "They kept asking me who the leader of the protests was and I said that this is all voluntary. We have no leader."

In a sign that censors were at work, the name "Zhenhai" was blocked on China's popular microblogging site Sina Weibo.

Protester Yu Yibing said he wanted the factory to be closed and his 7-year-old son to grow up in a clean environment.

"As the common people, we need to live in a green environment. This is a reasonable request," Yu said. "But the government only puts out some statement and refuses to see us and also suppresses us. I don't know how else we can express our views."

The Zhenhai district government, which comes under the Ningbo government, said Ningbo's Communist Party chief, Wang Huizhong, and mayor, Liu Qi, had held discussions with local residents Saturday night.

It said in a short statement on its website Sunday evening that the project wouldn't go ahead and that refining at the factory would stop for the time being while a scientific review is conducted.

The official Xinhua News Agency said the planned project was designed to produce 15 million tons of refined oil and 1.2 million tons of ethylene per year and belongs to Sinopec Zhenhai Refining & Chemical Co., which has invested 55.87 billion yuan ($8.9 billion).

Calls to Zhenhai police and the propaganda department of Ningbo police rang unanswered Sunday.

Past environmental protests have targeted a waste-water pipeline in eastern China and a copper plant in west-central China. A week ago, hundreds protested for several days in a small town on China's Hainan island over a coal-fired power plant.

Bao-Bao's Blog: Trip Report, Part 27: Kung Krabaen Bay Nature ...

Along the Gulf of Thailand in Chanthaburi, Kung Krabaen Bay - also known as "Stingray Bay" to the locals because of its shape - is home to a huge area of mangrove forest: the?Kung Krabaen Mangrove Forest and Nature Center.
While there are many many other mangrove swamp areas around the gulf, this park is, I'm told, about the largest and more visitor- and education-friendly of them all. ?At a little over 500 acres (1,300 rai) it's difficult to get a big picture of it because it's so dense you can't see the forest for, well, for the trees. ?Literally, in this case.
It's like stepping back into prehistoric times when you enter the forest, if you you can forgive a little over a mile of raised wooden walkways that meander through the place. The open waterway in the lead photo today is one of a precious few I saw as I made my way through beneath the dense canopy of mangrove branches and leaves.
The mangrove trees that dominate the area are classified as Sonneratia alba (of the family Sonneratiaceae). Their extensive root systems, both above and below ground, filter salt from the water, making the brackish mix of salt water from the gulf and fresh water from the rivers usable where it couldn't sustain many other varieties of plant life.

There was very little air movement in the forest, even though you could see movement in the tree tops high overhead, and I was lucky it wasn't a hot day; the humidity in the area might have been overwhelming otherwise.

Birds sang out with a variety of calls around me, and every so often you could catch a glimpse of wildlife - if you were taking your time and being observant. ?Butterflies were visible near the edges of the forest, but I saw very few beneath the canopy itself.

What you could?see were several varieties of small crabs, skittering over and around the tree roots. Most were in the three inch wide category; blues, greens and reds being their predominant colors. ?The light under the trees was low enough that I got quite a few blurry pictures, but not many worth sharing here. ?Here's one:

Another unexpected creature were the freshwater rays that rested on the surface of the mud in some of the shallow areas. ?These two were either snuggling or mating; perhaps both.
The park is open from early morning to dusk most every day, and because of the educational value of the place it's a regular stop for school outings. It's not far from the area I stayed in the Laem Sing area for my long weekend holiday. On the map below the park is on the bay with the purple dot, and Laem Sing is indicated with a green one.
Even if you don't make the five hour drive from Bangkok to visit here, try looking up other similar areas and check them out. I've seen photos posted by a friend of another park like this near Hua Hin. It's worth the effort.

Economic growth ticks up in third quarter

CNBC's Rick Santelli breaks down the third quarter data on the nation's economy, and discussing its impact on the markets, with CNBC's Steve Liesman.

By Reuters

Economic growth picked up in the third quarter as a late burst in consumer spending offset the first cutbacks in investment in more than a year by cautious businesses.

The stronger pace of expansion, however, fell short of what is needed to make much of a dent in unemployment, and offers little cheer for the White House ahead of the closely contested November 6 presidential election.

Gross domestic product expanded at a 2.0 percent annual rate, the Commerce Department said on Friday, accelerating from the second quarter's 1.3 percent pace. A pace in excess of 2.5 percent is needed over several quarters to make substantial headway cutting the jobless rate.

Economists polled by Reuters had expected a 1.9 percent growth pace in the third quarter. The report comes a little more than a week before the election in which President Barack Obama is trying to fend off Republican challenger Mitt Romney.

Since climbing out of the 2007-09 recession, the economy has faced a series of headwinds from high gasoline prices to the debt turmoil in Europe and, lately, fears of U.S. government austerity.

It has struggled to exceed a 2 percent growth pace and remains about 4.5 million jobs short of where it stood when the downturn started.

Consumers, however, largely shrugged off the impending sharp cuts in government spending and higher taxes, which are due at the start of the year absent congressional action.

Indeed, they went on a bit of a shopping spree as the quarter wound down, buying a range of goods - including automobiles and Apple Inc's iPhone 5.

Consumer spending, which accounts for about 70 percent of U.S. economic activity, grew at a 2 percent rate after increasing 1.5 percent in the prior period.

Spending despite income squeeze
High stock prices and firming house values have made households a bit more willing to take on new debt, supporting consumer spending. However, incomes were squeezed in the last quarter, causing households to save less to fund their purchases.

The amount of income available to households after accounting for inflation and taxes rose at a tepid 0.8 percent rate in the third quarter, slowing for a brisk 3.1 percent pace the prior period. The saving rate slowed to a 3.7 percent rate after increasing 4 percent in the second quarter.

The faster pace of spending was achieved despite a spike in inflation pressures as gasoline prices rose. A price index for personal spending rose at a 1.8 percent rate, accelerating from the second quarter's 0.7 percent pace.

But a core inflation measure that strips out food and energy costs slowed to a 1.3 percent rate after rising 1.7 percent in the prior quarter, suggesting the increase in overall price pressures will be temporary.

With about 23 million Americans either out of work or underemployed, there are fears the current pace of spending will not be sustained, especially if gasoline prices maintain their recent upward march and families get a higher tax bill in 2013.

The automatic tax hikes and government spending cuts, known as the "fiscal cliff," will drain about $600 billion out of the economy next year absent congressional action.

Fiscal cliff fears have already hammered business spending, which dropped at a 1.3 percent pace in the third quarter, falling for the first time since the first three months of 2011.

Part of the drag in business investment, which had been a source of strength for the economy, came from equipment and software, where outlays were the weakest since the second quarter of 2009.

Spending on nonresidential structures contracted after five straight quarters of growth.

In contrast, home building surged at a 14.4 percent rate, thanks in large part to the Federal Reserve's ultra accommodative monetary policy stance, which has driven mortgage rates to record lows.

Inventories were a drag on growth because of a drought in the country's Midwest, which has decimated crops. Farm inventories cut 0.42 percentage point from GDP growth.

In addition, slowing global demand, particularly weakness in Europe and China, caused U.S. exports to contract for the first time since the first quarter of 2009. That left a trade deficit that weighed on GDP growth.

But there was surprisingly good news on government spending, which snapped eight straight quarters of declines on a strong rebound in defense outlays.?

The House of Seven Gables may sound sweet and romantic, until you realize it?s about living with guilt, self-destruction, and witchcraft. Young Goodman Brown tells of a mysterious errand in the woods that leads to one man?s eyes being opened and his complete loss of faith in humanity. Just what happened out there? Let this classic author take you on a journey that will make your heart skip a beat, and second-guess everything around you.

Shirley Jackson

If you won the lottery, that would be a good thing right? Not in Shirley Jackson?s world! Her classic story, The Lottery, tells of a town making sacrifices to help the fall crops. The Haunting of Hill House has been adapted into horror films not once, but twice! These stories that warn of the dangers of conformity and trusting your intuition make Shirley Jackson a surefire bet for a creepy read.

Dante Alighieri

His Divine Comedy is a benchmark in world literature. With one epic poem, Dante solidified his place in history. Combining Dante?s words with Gustave Dor??s engravings, has defined our cultural imagery of Hell. If you want to witness the underworld in its most pure form, without visiting there yourself, take a peek at an illustrated Divine Comedy, if you dare!

George Orwell

Because of Orwell, one year is synonymous with a dystopian future and gave us all something to fear: 1984. And if that?s not enough, add in Animal Farm.

Telling tales of caution for our future, Orwell scared an entire generation? just, it seems, not enough to make the necessary changes to avoid the social structures he warned about. Assuming they were avoidable at all.

Edgar Allen Poe

A beating heart, a swinging pendulum, a cask of wine, and of course a raven. Poe?s name stands virtually synonymous with the idea of creepy. As gothic as they are violent, as shadowy as they are subtle, his work reads as tortured as his characters and his soul.

?Quoth the raven, ?Nevermore.??

Bram Stoker & Mary Shelley

All together separate, but unified together thanks to Hollywood, Stoker?s Dracula and Shelley?s Frankenstein are forever joined (and tied on this list) as classic mythical monsters. Thanks to gothic imagery, themes of humanity at its darkest, and of course the classic Universal Horror Films, Bram Stoker and Mary Shelley almost double-handedly defined nearly two centuries of horror. Look no further for a classic Halloween treat.

Stephen King

The legend himself. Not only will you find him on the best-seller list, and on those pesky profit-making end-caps, but his work will keep you looking over your shoulder.

From rabid dogs, to haunted cars, to hotels that make you go mad, King is the epitome of the horror genre. Carrie, The Stand, The Shining, Cujo, It, Pet Sematary, Night Shift, Firestarter, The Dead Zone? each a chilling classic. Need I go on?
