November 3rd is National Sandwich Day. On such a glorious day, in a city who?s major culinary contributions fall under the auspices of the Earl, it hardly seems as if there is enough lauditory chewing to go around. Do you thank those unnamed Italian-American wives who put antipasto salad to long roll to send their husbands off to Hog Island with a moveable one handed feast? Do Pat and Harry Olivieri deserve your Hosanahs for the Cheesesteak which has altered your shape to mimic that of the Liberty Bell itself? Or, are you a purist, worshiping at the altar of John Montagu the 4th Earl of Sandwich who was hungry as-all-get-out, but didn?t want to stop gamblin? and began his Edisonian Tinkerings which culminated in an entire new field of research, design, and consumption?
The Sandwich-Industrial-Complex is a large tent affair. And weather you fancy the fancies (crustless cucumbered petit-fores and clubs and such), or are content with oil stains on your blue collar deposited from long rolls of meats cheeses and the occasional vegetable, we can all agree that a world without the Earl?s innovation is sad, seated, two-handed, knife and forked affair that would make one ponder the point of very existence.
On November Third, let the rejoicing resound throughout the land, and especially at Shank?s Original, where the day will serve double duty. Not only will the Earl and his sizable contribution be lauded, but November Third marks a cool half century that the good folks at Shanks have been tucking it into rolls for Y?all. In celebratory commemoration, all of your favorites will be only $2.50 all day! And Shank?s is also throwing a Birthday bash with festivities and free birthday cake throughout the day! Enjoy the old-time neighborhood Italian food from Shank?s with sandwiches like the award-winning Chicken Cutlet Italiano, made with chicken cutlets dipped in homemade breadcrumbs, sharp provolone, and broccoli rabe.
